Intervention

Intervention involves using a framework to identify students with learning difficulties and to implement responsive instruction to maximise literacy and numeracy achievement

Research shows that Structured Synthetic Phonics programs provide the most effective approach to teaching phonics (decoding) skills. This approach is best practice for all students in the classroom, not just those with learning difficulties..

At Morphett Vale Primary School Tier 3 – intensive and individualised support is offered to students that are identified as requiring this intervention to develop phonological and phonemic awareness

Tier 3 is increased intensity, frequency and duration of instruction for a few students. This is in addition to tier 1 instruction. It involves:

  • using evidence-based intensive, personalised and sometimes specialised assessment and instruction
  • providing opportunities for students to apply what they have learnt and build confidence
  • documenting and monitoring specific learning goals
  • seeking external advice (where required, for example a speech pathologist) to develop an individual learning plan and possibly an alternative program.
